OCA Student Cherry Fiction Confronts Inner Turmoil with Raw Honesty in New Single "Mirrors"
Emerging sad-grrrl Cherry Fiction is set to release her debut single "Mirrors," a poignant exploration of self-perception and inner conflict, on May 14th. The track turns inside out the complexities of grappling with one's reflection, both literally and metaphorically, with unflinching honesty and the raw energy of Midwest emo and confessional indie rock.
Despite her striking, red aesthetic, Cherry Fiction is known within her community for her succinct and direct mode of expression, a trait that shines through in the song's evocative lyrics. "Mirrors" lays bare the struggle of facing one's flaws and the pain of fractured relationships, as reflected in lines like "Smashed glass and bloody hands / I need boxing gloves just to face my own reflection" and "It's too late for super glue / Cause you took too many pieces with you". The song's emotional core will resonate deeply with fans of introspective songwriting and the cathartic release of emo.
"Mirrors" is more than just a song; it's an intimate look into the artist's psyche, offering listeners a space to confront their own vulnerabilities. Cherry Fiction's ability to weave personal experiences into universal themes is a testament to her artistry and positions her as a compelling voice for a generation seeking authenticity in music.

We sat down with Danielle AKA Cherry Fiction to find out more about the exciting process of releasing her first single into the world.
OCA: Can you tell us what inspired you to write this song and what the creative process was like from first idea to final track?
Cherry Fiction: This song was inspired by inner conflicts and not being able to face yourself in the mirror. It's quite a dark song when you look at the lyrics and I hope that people can relate to and find solace in this song.
OCA: Now that your first single is out, how has this experience shaped your vision for the kind of artist you want to become? How did OCA help you define this?
Cherry Fiction: OCA helped me find my artistic direction as I felt lost within the sense of genres, and instead made me understand that I don’t need to conform to a certain genre or style but instead create a fusion of genres to create the dark, moody music I love to make.
OCA: What role did your time at OCA play in helping you shape this song and bring it to life—from writing and composing to recording and releasing?
Cherry Fiction: Through OCA, I was able to define my artistic direction and develop the song from a simple guitar riff and chorus melody to a powerful expression of emotion.
OCA: Were there any challenges along the way, and how did being part of the OCA community help you overcome them?
Cherry Fiction: Finding a good riff to support the main melody was really tricky, but through discussions in creative sessions at OCA, I was able to shape the song from a rough demo into what it is now.
OCA: What advice would you give to other young artists who dream of releasing their own music one day?
Cherry Fiction: It’s all about messing around until you find something that sticks. Keep writing as often as you can and eventually you’ll write something that you just can’t get out of your head, and once that happens you know you’ve stumbled across something great!
